The Value of Being Present

We live with so many distractions; it’s easy to check our phone despite doing an important task or rather than engaging in a meaningful conversation with our companions, we check social media posts.

For the final episode of season 1 of the Rejuvenated Woman Podcast, Cathy Carr had the privilege to speak with the artists from Sacred Earth Music, Jethro and Prem Williams. They are Australia’s very own and Internationally known Mantra artists.

One of the topics they highlighted to finding stillness is the value of being present. As Jethro and Prem mentioned, we live in a world where there are constant distractions that divert our attention.

We may not even realize that we’re leaning towards distraction instead of focusing on what we have to do. A good example of this is when we watch TV while eating, we don’t focus on how the food tastes because we become engrossed with what we’re watching.

Another example that most of us are guilty of is, when we’re out eating with friends, we constantly check our phones, and we are absorbed with social media, apps, or virtual conversations.

Prem mentioned an effective method on how they encourage being present in their homes. They set boundaries in their lives and in their home, there are scroll-free and screen-free zones. When they, the kids, or guests are in that area, they are not allowed to use phones.

Being in this area motivates them to have conversations with each other and form better connections. This space serves a healthy break from their busy lives that are often connected to the online world.

Moreover, Prem mentioned the significance of being honest with the self. For us to be genuinely present in our surroundings, we have to know exactly how we’re feeling. A few questions that can stimulate honesty are:

  • Am I loving myself this day?

  • Am I giving myself stillness?

  • Am I giving my body the nourishment/hydration it needs?

These questions allow us to ponder if we’re really taking care of our mind and body. If we feel that there’s a struggle to find stillness, Prem suggests finding a place that can support you in this journey.

You can enrol in a meditation class or go to a place that helps you develop more self-love and care. Find what resonates with whom you truly are and what you love doing.

Sometimes, we fail to realize that there are things we do that keep us from forming deep, meaningful relationships. When we become aware of our distractions, we start living a conscious life, ready to care for ourselves and others.
